February 25, 2015

The Kia Carnival scored another major upset in the Commissioner's Cup with a 106-103 win over erstwhile league-leader Talk 'N Text on Wednesday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

With the win, Kia improved to 3-4 to climb to eighth place in the standings with four games to go in its schedule. The top eight teams in the league will make the playoffs.

"Nagpapasalamat ako sa lahat ng sumuporta [at] sa panginoon na duminig sa panalangin namin," said Kia head coach Manny Pacquiao. "Ibig sabihin maganda yung plays ng mga players. Sa training, maganda ginagawa nila."

Hyram Bagatsing had 21 points in 20 minutes, while PJ Ramos almost had a triple double with 24 points, 25 boards, and nine assists to lead the Carnival.

The two teams were virtually even at the half, before Kia's Hyram Bagatsing caught fire. The former DLSU Green Archer hit back to back treys to give the Carnival a one point lead, 63-62. Bagatsing accounted for 12 of Kia's 28 points in the third, with all of them coming from beyond the arc. Kia found themselves up by as much as eight in the third, before TNT's guards trimmed the lead with a late surge, 78-76.
The Carnival continued to pull points from all around in the fourth, leading by as much as nine. They came into the final minute leading by seven, before a 5-1 swing had TNT trimming the lead to three, 106-104, with 35 ticks to go. The Texters had 10 seconds to tie the game and send it into overtime, but Ranidel De Ocampo missed his attempt from deep.

Leo Avenido added 16 points for Kia with four triples. Kyle Pascual and Riel Cervantes had 10 each, while Virgil Buensuceso added 10 points with seven assists off the bench. LA Revilla had a bad shooting night, posting just five points, but he had eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Jayson Castro led TNT with 24 points, while Ivan Johnson had 21 points and 12 boards. Larry Fonacier and Aaron Aban had 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Matt Ganuelas-Rosser and Ranidel De Ocampo combined for 23 points off the bench.
Talk 'N Text suffered just its second loss in seven games to fall to second place.

The win came on the heels of the Carnival's 95-84 stunner over Purefoods last week, marking the first pair of back-to-back wins for the expansion PBA franchise.

"Malalakas na teams na tinalo namin. Yung kumpiyansa ng bawat isa nandun na," Pacquiao added. The eight division boxing champion also stated that he might play one more game before starting his training in Los Angeles.

"Yung mga assistant coaches, coaches ko, sila naman yung mag-aasikaso sa team," shared Pacquiao. "Baka maglaro din ako sa sabado. Alam naman natin ginagawa natin. After Saturday's game, pupunta na ko ng LA."

Pacquiao, who is beginning his training for his May 2 fight against Floyd Mayweather, saw action for six minutes. He failed to score.
