My Dubai on a Budget: An Experience from an Expat working in Saudi Arabia

First is dreaming and planning.

Are you going to travel by yourself or with friends or loved ones?  My 2 colleagues and me were dreaming of going somewhere else other than the present location which  is Saudi Arabia, our workplace and  the Philippines, which is our mother country.  One colleague overheard what we were talking about.  Our chosen location for the adventure was Dubai.  And she verbalized that she wanted to join.  So that makes 4 of us.  In the end only the 2 of us, the last one who joined the conversation, were able to pursue with that dream. One colleague changed her mind because she was saving money for her coming marriage.  While the other one was not able to come because there was a problem with her visa.

Second, what is your budget?

I alloted 5000 Saudi Riyals, this includes everything, the dubai visa, airline ticket, hotel, food (lunch and dinner, breakfast was included in our hotel), the transportation expenses (use the metro train or by taxi) and the dubai tour and your saudi exit and re entry visa.

Third, apply for dubai visa online.

Fourth,  if you were issued a dubai visa, book for your flight early.

The earlier you book, the cheaper is the ticket price that you will get.  We chose the Flydubai Airlines.  Flydubai was the cheapest airline to  go to dubai at that time.

Fifth, choose your hotel.

We chose the suite novotel mall of the emirates.  The location was good.  Just a 5 minute walk to the mall of emirates.  There were 2 free super pass ticket to ski dubai and free daily breakfast.

Sixth, apply for exit re-entry visa from your government relations.

Last, plan your itinerary.

What will you do on your 1st day until your last day in Dubai?

Below was our itinerary for a 4 days, 3 nights stay.

Day 1 Ski dubai inside the Mall of the Emirates.
           Malling after ski dubai

Day 2 Dubai Mall in the morning
           Desert Safari in the afternoon

Day 3 Aquaventure in Atlantis up to 6 pm
Dancing Fountain at 8:30 pm in Dubai Mall

Day 4  Departure from Dubai
Very tired yesterday, no extra energy  to go out anymore,  We just prepared our things                         because our flight is 2 pm.

We did not see the miracle garden because it is close as of the moment.  We did not go to dhow cruise, because one tour guide said that the food was not that good and they do not want the travellers to complain.  Anyway the tanoura dance in dhow cruise can be seen in the desert safari.

Four days is good but more than 4 days of touring Dubai was better.  One tour will consume your time and  energy.  But with these four days, I am very happy from what I had experienced.  I love Dubai.  Hoping to go there again.  Cheers!

Below were some of our pictures of Dubai

Globe Seafarer SIM.

Globe Telecom gives Filipino seamen a new option for a product they can use to ensure good communication with their families back home with the launching of the “Globe Seafarer SIM.

This product makes constant communication in the Philippines possible because it will work anywhere in the world and even while a ship is sailing on the high seas. . It can be used on most networks using a global interconnection with over 650 GSM networks worldwide. Shown in photo during the launch of the partnership in South Hampton, United Kingdom are (from left) Globe Telecom Head of International Business Group Rizza Maniego-Eala and iVitta CEO Simon Black.

Globe also claims that this exclusive SIM for seafarers offers the most affordable call and text rates. Their low call and text rates is made possible because of their partnership with iVitta Mobile, a UK-based telco solutions provider.

One Globe Seafarer SIM gives the seamen two (2) numbers:

SMART Link:for Pinoy Seamen

Smart Telecom takes maritime satellite communication to a new level by being the first to introduce, Smart Link, a product that makes it possible for Filipino seamen to send text messages and call their loved ones in the Philippines even while they are onboard.

Before, seamen would have to endure long periods of no communication with their families while their ships are sailing the high seas due to poor or lack of signal. This is not the case anymore as Smart Telecom takes maritime satellite communication to a new level by being the first to introduce, Smart Link, a product that makes it possible for Filipino seamen to send text messages and call their loved ones in the Philippines even while they are onboard.

Smart is proud to be the first and only wireless services provider in the Philippines to offer this unique service to the Filipino seafarers who comprised majority of seafarers worldwide.

Seafarers can use their ordinary cell phones to get in touch as if they are still on land. Their rates are very affordable because one can call for as low as P15 per minute. The P15/min call-home rate only applies when calling to the Philippines.

There are times when the SMART Link Satellite Phone automatically picks up and connects to any of the signals available in the location. To be sure one is using their desired satellite signal,  lock-in to the channel number of your choice before making a call. SMART Link calls are charged based on the satellite signal that the SMART Link satellite phone is using to connect.

To enjoy Smart Link, just use SMART Link SIM cards made for FR190G satellite phone terminals (installed on board the ship and can be shared by multiple users) or an R190 mobile satellite phone (ideal for personal use). SMART Link SIM Cards can also be used to call from anywhere in the world through SMART Link NetFone, the internet to phone (VOIP) calling service for SMART Link subscribers.

And because SMART Link is prepaid, one can easily manage their spending. It even allows one to reload even in the middle of the ocean. SMART Link prepaid cards are available in affordable denominations.

Smart Link, with its current shared satellite terminals on-board vessels, currently serves seafarers sailing the seas of Asia-Pacific, Indian Ocean, Middle East, Africa plus some parts of Europe and the Mediterranean. With the launch of Smart Link GSM service, Smart will be able to provide communication to the entire maritime force around the globe.
